Comment Detail: Source includes age (42) and location (South Dakota). Using his age and the official census date of 1 Apr 1930 gives a birth date range from 2 Apr 1887 to 1 Apr 1888. Using his age and the marriage date of 17 Mar 1911 gives a birth date range from 18 Mar 1885 to 17 Mar 1886, which is internally inconsistent for this record.)

CONFLICTS
Birth Date: This database uses between 2 Apr 1887 and 31 Dec 1887. His obituary gives an explicit birth year (1886) and an age (53). When applied to his death date of 29 Mar 1939, the age gives a birth date range of 30 Mar 1885 to 29 Mar 1886, so the record is internally consistent, but doesn't agree with the database values. [obituary-earl-newman-1939]
Birth Date: This database uses between 2 Apr 1887 and 31 Dec 1887. The marriage index for Earl and Anna's marriage gives an age of (22), which, when applied to the marriage date of 17 Mar 1911, gives a birth date range from 18 Mar 1888 to 17 Mar 1889. [marriage-newman-rose-registry-1911]
FOLLOWUP
His parents were William and Mary Jane Newman, both buried in the Groton Cemetery in Groton, South Dakota. [interview-{private}-2009]
I have a photocopy of an obituary for William, married Mary J. Ramsden on 12 Dec 1897, published 29 Dec 1921 in an unknown paper. His Find A Grave (monument #186758442 also has a copy of what looks like the same original, down to a hand-drawn checkmark. I also have a photocopy of an obituary for Mary, published 18 Jul 1940 in an unknown paper. Her Find A Grave (monument #186758479 also has a copy of what looks like the same original, down to a hand-drawn underline. Knowing the original paper would be useful. Maybe from Aberdeen?
When Earl died on 29 Mar 1939, he was survived by his children, his mother, three sisters, and one brother. The sisters were (1) _____ Newman, married to A. Anderson and living in Groton, South Dakota, (2) ______ Newman, married to Hugh Brown and living in Lead, South Dakota, and (3) Gladys Newman, unmarried and living in Groton, South Dakota. The brother was Guy Newman, living in Phillip, South Dakota. [obituary-earl-newman-1939]
Note that his Find A Grave memorial is inconsistent and suggests some further investigation is needed. Specifically, his gravestone gives a birth year of 1987, but the vital stats at the top of the page gives the conflicting date 13 Sep 1886, and the text below that notes that a metal marker with that date was missing as of 1999. The question is which of the dates is correct: the (unphotographed) metal marker or the stone marker? Could there have been partial truth in both, and the date was 13 Sep 1887? (One-year-off errors are frustratingly common.) [marker-earl-newman-1939]
