Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)

CONFLICTS

Birth Date: This database uses the range 2 Apr 1922 to 1 Apr 1923. The marriage certificate of Harold and Ida gives an age of (18) at her next birthday, which, when applied (using her apparent "current" age of 17) to the certificate date of 18 Jul 1938, gives a birth date range from 19 July 1920 to 18 July 1921. However, just two years later, 1940 U.S. Census says she is 17. While this might be an error of the informant, I suspect it is more likely she lied on the marriage certificate because she was under-age. (At the time a girl could legally marry in Iowa when she was 14, but needed her parent's permission if she was under 18.) [marriage-allgier-miller-1938]

Birth Location: This database uses Strawberry Point, Iowa. Ida's obituary references Mason City, Iowa. Although the marriage certificate appears to be wrong with respect to her birth date, there seems less reason to believe it is wrong on the location, and it was informed directly from Ida, unlike (probably) her obituary. [obituary-ida-allgier-1985]

Birth Location: This database uses Strawberry Point, Iowa. Her son John Allgier's birth certificate notes her birthplace as Butler County, Iowa. Though this has about the same weight as her marriage return, only one has the chance to be correct, if either are. [birth-john-allgier-1939]

SPELLING

Surname: This database uses Allgier. The obituary for Harold Allgier adds an incorrect 's' to the end of the name. [obituary-harold-allgiers-1974]
