General Notes and Anecdotes
Earle won the gold medal in pole vault at the 1936 Olympics. [obituary-earle-meadows-1992]
Earle married Marguerite Caswell some six months before telling anyone, even Marguerite's father, Clyde Caswell. According to the Los Angeles Times, "... when the [USC] Trojans and Stanford tangled for high-point honors in the conference meet at the Coliseum last May 29, Meadows and Miss Caswell agreed that if he suceeded in breaking the world's pole-vault record of 14ft. 8-1/2in. they'd celebrate by getting married./He did---and they did." Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)
FOLLOWUP
Earle may have been born on 29 Jun 1913, based on a sports biography on the USA Track & Field's Hall of Fame. 〈http://www.usatf.org/HallOfFame/TF/showBio.asp?HOFIDs=224〉 (accessed 15 June 2018)
Multiple records indicate that Earle was born in Corinth, Mississippi. However, there are two Corinth place names in Mississippi. One is unincorporated area in Perry County, the other is a town of 5,000+ as of 2010 and is the county seat of Alcorn County. I strongly expect the latter is the correct location, but I don't have direct evidence for that yet.
Earle was awarded a scholarship to USC. Since he proved to be a track star (pole vault) at USC, was the scholarship for sports? [obituary-earl-meadows-1992]
