Using her age and the official census date of 1 Jun 1900 gives a birth date range from 2 Jun 1841 to 1 Jun 1842, which encompasses the given date. Note that the year is actually somewhat difficult to read; it looks like 1814 with a bar between the 1 and 4, or it could be interpreted as 1841. Since the former was clearly unreasonable and the latter makes the record consistent, it was chosen.

Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)

CONFLICT

Birth Date: This database uses 6 Oct 1841. The 1880 U.S. Census gives an age of (39), which, when applied to the official census date of 1 Jun 1880, gives a birth date range from 2 Jun 1840 to 1 Jun 1841. [census-us-1880-ps-il-knox-139-7]

Marriage Date: This database uses Dec 1894. Jennie Crowell's obituary uses the date December 25, 1895. I suspect the day, like the month, is correct, and the year was simply off by 1. [obituary-jennie-spear-1923]

SPELLING

Given Name: This database uses Lucinda. The 1870 U.S. Census spells it Lucindia. [census-us-1870-ps-il-knox-indianpoint-36]

Nickname: This database uses Jennie. The 1920 US Census spells it Jenny. This is a standard variant, but it does differ from what is being used. [census-us-1920-ps-il-adams-27-xva]

FOLLOWUP

Lucinda's parents were John and Elizabeth (_____) Crowell. [obituary-jennie-spear-1923]

Both of her parents were born in Virginia. [census-us-1900-ps-ks-rawlins-131-1, census-us-1910-ps-il-knox-169-3a]

Lucinda may have been born in Franklin County, Indiana. [research-a-spear-family-history]

Lucinda and William Spear may have married in Chardon, Rawlins County, Kansas. [research-a-spear-family-history]

In 1870, two other people were living with Lucinda and James Stevens. One was Nancy Stephens[Stevens] (50). Was she an aunt of James? The other was Wm. H. Ogden (3). Perhaps a grandchild of Nancy? [census-us-1870-ps-il-knox-indianpoint-36]

In 1880, James and Lucinda had a son, 13-year old William (or Orville?). However, he was not listed in the 1870 census. Why not? A servant named Rina Bootan (maybe) was also living with the family, doing kitchen work. [census-us-1880-ps-il-knox-139-7]

In 1900, a servant, Joseph L. Hundly, was doing farm labor and living with William and Lucinda. [census-us-1900-ps-ks-rawlins-131-1]

She was survived by a sister Martha Ellen Cox (Sutherland, Nebraska). Four other sisters and three brothers died before her. While she was survived by numerous nephews and nieces, William Ogden (Long Beach, California) was explicitly called out since Lucinda had raised him since he was a baby. [obituary-jennie-spear-1923]

She was probably buried in Hermon Cemetery. [research-a-spear-family-history]

The Hermon Cemetery is probably Hermon Methodist Cemetery, which is across the street from Hermon Christian Cemetery. I don't know if they were once joined administratively.
