General Notes and Anecdotes
Nancy was a water, snow, and jet-skier, an avid traveler, a SCUBA diver, and loved flying in small airplanes. She loved cats, Lego sets, pickup trucks and fire engines. She devoted her life to the fire service in California until she was injured, and then in Tennessee as a volunteer. [obituary-nancy-dyer-2020]
After graduating from fire academy training, she worked for CalFire, the California Department of Forest and Fire Protection, initially assigned to Shasta County, followed by the Riverside Unit (and promoted to a Fire Apparatus Engineer), and then to the Butte Unit. In the early 1990s she was promoted to Fire Captain in the Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit. However, she suffered injuries working on a structure fire near Oroville, California, and forced into an early retirement from CalFire. Following this she took a paramedic class and worked in the late 1990s in Chico, California. [obituary-nancy-dyer-2020]
On her husband's retirement in 2007, they moved to Tellico Village, Tennessee. While living in Tellico Village, she worked with the Tellico Village Volunteer Fire Company as an EMT as well as a firefighter, after having overcome some of her previous injuries with CalFire, though still in constant pain. [obituary-nancy-dyer-2020]
After moving to Lenoir City, Tennessee, she joined the Greenback Volunteer Fire Department, again as an EMT and a firefighter. [obituary-nancy-dyer-2020]

FOLLOWUP
Nancy married _____ Dyer. Her obituary notes that she opened Dyer's Athletics, a sporting goods store, with her former husband. The divorce likely took place after her move to Tennessee, since she is noted as moving with her husband there in 2017, well after leaving the store. [obituary-nancy-dyer-2020]
An interview with {private} Hughes identifies Nancy's residence as of Jun 2020 as California, but also noted that {private} was a "bit out of touch" with Nancy and her siblings. It is therefore possible {private} did not know that Nancy had moved to Tennessee in 2007. [interview-{private}-2020]
