General Notes and Anecdotes

The records for Deborah Pierson's widow's pension notes that George died of "... remittent fever while on the Meridian Expedition from hard marching and exposure while in the line of duty ... " Note that remittent fever is not a specific disease, but a symptom of a variety of infectious diseases. [military-widowpen-deborah-pierson-1864]

George was honored with an inscription on the Soldier's monument in Tipton, Iowa. [Since this honor, many of the inscriptions have worn thin and are becoming difficult to read so two red granite slab monuments were erected near the monument, including the names of the recorded Civil War veterans. George's name can be found on one of these slabs, and is noted as being on the east side of the original monument. [military-gravereg-george-pierson-1864]

Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)

SPELLING

Surname: This database uses Pierson. The 1856 Iowa Census uses Pearson. [census-us-iowa-1856-cedar-springdale-312]

FOLLOWUP

The 1860 U.S. Census includes a line for C.[G.?] H. Pierson, a 5 month old boy as of 1 Jun 1860, the official date of the census. There is no other record of C.H. that I can find so far. This child should be a 2 month old Barak. George and Deborah Pierson also had a child George Henry Pierson (G. H. Pierson), but he wasn't born until 1861. Was Barak renamed when he was an infant?
