General Notes and Anecdotes

When the TJ Spear family moved to Rawlins County, Kansas in 1885, Belle staked a claim next to the one staked by TJ. This was presumably to allow her some freedom to create an informal school for the neighbor children; teaching them before there were organized schools in the area. [obituary-belle-border-1965]

Belle was engaged to Edmond McConnell, with a wedding planned for May 1888. However, he was shot and killed in April 1888 for trespassing on the claim of Franklin Baker. His will specified that Belle would receive all of his property, which was extensive. [obituary-edmund-mcconnell-1888]

Belle's sister, Wilma, was staying with Cyrus and Belle Anderson by at least 1900 and probably through Wilma's wedding in 1906. [census-us-1900-ps-ks-thomas-180-3a, periodical-married-higley-spear-1906]

When Cyrus' health began to fail sometime after leaving his position as Railroad Commissioner, Cyrus and Belle moved to Atwood, Kansas, where Belle took a position as Assistant County Clerk. She held this position at the beginning of World War I and was Clerk of the County Registration Board. [obituary-belle-border-1965]

Belle moved to Texas in 1944 to be with her son Harold and his wife Minnie, where she lived for the rest of her life. [obituary-belle-border-1965]

She loved to make hooked rugs of her own design. She gave these rugs to her nephews and nieces as they graduated or were married. As a result, there were at least twelve states in which you could find rugs when she passed away. [obituary-belle-border-1965]

Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)

CONFLICTS

Birth Date: This database uses 1 Jul 1860. The 1930 U.S. Census gives an age of (68), which, when applied to the official census date of 1 Apr 1930, gives a birth date range from 2 Apr 1861 to 1 Apr 1862. [census-us-1930-ps-ks-rawlins-17-1a]

Marriage Date: This database uses 10 June 1891. The 1900 U.S. Census gives the number of years (9) of marriage, which, when applied to the official census date of 1 Jun 1900, gives a marriage date range from 2 June 1890 to 1 June 1891. [census-us-1900-ps-ks-thomas-180-3a]

FOLLOWUP

The arrangement of Louis and Belle on the 1930 U.S. Census is unusual. While the husband is the "head" for most households and the wife is identified as his wife, in this case Belle is the head and Louis is identified as her husband. [census-us-1930-ps-ks-rawlins-17-1a]

Was Belle a school superintendent at Rawlins County Normal? (The Atchison Daily Champion; Atchison, Kansas; 14 Aug 1889)

Was Belle in the "ladies cornet band of Atwood"? (The Atchison Daily Champion; Atchison, Kansas; 14 Aug 1889)

There exists a record for the marriage of Lewis and Belle (different couple? Belle's obituary wrong?) who were married 5 Jan 1922 in Stuart, Guthrie County, Iowa. The were granted marriage licence 3720 on 3 January 1922. This may also have been Lewis' third marriage. (From Iowa, U.S., Marriage Records, 1880-1951, database with images on Ancestry.com, 1921-1922 ⟩ 499 (Dallas-Iowa), image 235. IMPORTANT: This is an image from an index listing, not an original marriage return or certificate.)

Belle along with her son, H.E. Anderson, and his wife, may have spent a week with Mr. and Mrs. G.L. Niles in Mountain Home, Arkansas, holding a fish fry in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Whiteley on "the lake." (Baxter Bulletin; Mountain Home, Arkansas; 23 Aug 1946) [This may not have any genealogical value, but I wanted to note it. The closest lake was probably Norfolk Lake, but it may also have been Bull Shoals Lake, which is a little farther away from Mountain View.]

Belle was probably buried at Atwood Cemetery, in Atwood, Rawlins County, Kansas, United States. [research-a-spear-family-history]
