Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)
CONFLICTS
Birth Date: This database uses 4 Mar 1898. The 1930 U.S. Census gives an age of (31), which, when applied to the official census date of 1 Apr 1930, gives a birth date range from 2 Apr 1898 to 1 Apr 1899. [census-us-1930-ps-ks-rawlins-17-1a]
Birth Location: This database uses Kansas. His World War II draft registration card has a location of Colby (or Colley), Texas. The state disagrees with other records, but beyond that there is currenly no such town in Texas. If Colby is another name for Aldine, it is currently located in an unincorporated area north of (but within the extraterritorial jurisdiction of) Houston in Harris County. As for the alternate name, there is no Colley (and it appears there never was), but there is a Colleyville. It should also be noted that the birth place is in a different hand than Harold's name and address. The presumtion here is that Harold wrote his name, residence, date of birth, maybe his wife's name, and his signature, but the rest was added by the registrar or a clerk, and the Texas was an error by the latter. (Perhaps Harold only gave a town and the registrar just entered Texas out of reflex. This is an assumption, but it seems a reasonable explanation.) [military-draftreg-harold-anderson-1942]
FOLLOWUP
Harold was probably born in Colby, Kansas, as suggested by the residence of both parents in 1900, and by the location of the occupation of his father in in 1898.
Did Harold work for the FBI? The 26 Jul 1934 edition of The Morning Chronicle (Manhattah, Kansas) on page 1 note that "Harold E. Anderson, government agent" provided testimony in a perjury case, which in turn was related to a gangster case. The 6 Jul 1939 edition of The Parsons Sun (Parsons, Kansas) on page 2 calls Harold E. Anderson an FBI chief in a story (continued from page 1). However, I've found several Harold E. Andersons in Kansas during this time.
