FOLLOWUP
I can find nothing for William Shafer after about 1890, and nothing for Wheeler Shafer before about 1890. Given this problem, I'm starting to think his middle initial W. stands for Wheeler, and that sometime before he married in 1890, he started using Wheeler as his given name.
Timeline and Records for Wheeler Shafer
Wheeler may have married Georgiana Unger on 12 Feb 1890 in Bethune, Colorado. (Ancestry database Colorado, U.S., County Marriage Records and State Index, 1862-2006 , path "Statewide Marriage Index 〉 Se-Sh 〉 All", image 4443 and path "County Marriages 〉 Kit Carson 〉 1889 - 1947", image 876)
The 1900 US Census suggests he was living in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana and that she was using the nickname Anna. Their children were Bertha E (7), John L (6), Ray A. (5), and May M. (3). (1900 US Census, LA, Calcasieu Parish, Ward Ten, page 20A / stamped 305A / Ancestry image 8, rows 43-48)
A register entry, including license and return for Stephen R. Stewart and Bertha E. Shafer, records their marriage on 17 Mar 1928 in Jefferson Davis Parish, Louisiana. It also identifies her parents as Wheeler W. Shafer and Georgiana [?i]ger. (FamilySearch collection Index to marriages, 1913-1970 ; Marriage record, 1913-1929, DGN 4705664, image 296)
Gravestones for Wheeler Shafer (b. 1 Oct 1862, d. 30 Jan 1920) and Anna Unger Shafer (b. 11 May 1861, d. 24 Jan 1952), along with markers for their children, Bertha Shafer Stewart (b. 5 July 1892, d. 17 Mar 1930), John Louis Shafer (b. 28 Dec 1893, d. 14 Jun 1976), and May Myrtle Shafer (b. 17 Oct 1896, d. 2 Jan 1979), and John's wife Clara Catherine Howard (b. 8 Mar 1892, d. 21 Jan 1954) can be found in a grouping of Shafer graves in Lakeview Cemetery (Lake Arthur, Jefferson Davis Parish, Louisiana). This grouping includes other members already in this database, including Aaron V. Shafer and Mary Shafer Spear. (Note that the Find A Grave memorial is not reliable; for example it identifies Wheeler's parents as William J. Shafer and Isabell Vorhies Shafer, despite the fact they were born about 54 years and 47 years earlier, respectively. In this database they are his grandparents.)
