There is an 1856 Iowa State Census record for an Adam Zehrung (b. abt 1835) in Tama County, Iowa. Next to his entry is one for Darkess Zehrung (female, b. abt 1839). Siblings? No other Zehrungs were listed, were their parents dead?
Though it doesn't fit the birth date (being off by 10 years) for this Adam, a Civil War service record exists for an Adam Zehrung, residing in Tama County, Iowa, serving the Union side for Iowa. Record: Enlisted as a Private on 23 May 1864 at the age of 18. Enlisted in Company K, 47th Infantry Regiment Iowa on 4 Jun 1864. Mustered Out Company K, 47th Infantry Regiment Iowa on 28 Sep 1864 at Davenport, IA.
In Ida (Zehring) Spear's obituary, Ida's mother is identified as Adam's second wife. However, I don't know anything so far of his first marriage. That information may change her children. (Note that the name Zehring looks like Zebring, but this appears to be the fault of the scan, check the 'n' in the same name. [obituary-ida-spear-1902]
A marriage record exists for an Adam Zehring and Ella Kesler, 9 Jan 1885 in Preble County, Ohio. This was found in "Ohio Marriages, 1803-1900" which is probably on Ancestry. However, he is also listed as "D" (presumably for divorced) in the Ancestry.com translation of his 1885 census. Unfortunately, the record image itself is undecipherable. Is there a relationship to Ella Zehring, who married John F. O'Donnell in 1884 in Iowa? (from Peck, J. L. E.. "Past and present of O'Brien and Osceola Counties, Iowa." Indianapolis, Ind.: B.F. Bowen & Co., 1914) In particular, a "Mrs. O'Donnel of Southerland" is mentioned in daughter Ida's obituary as Ida's sister, thus daughter of Adam. [obituary-ida-spear-1902]
