Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)

CONFLICTS

Birth Location: This database uses Parkston, Hutchinson County, Dakota Territory. Her obituary uses Parkston, S.D., but the state did not exist until 2 Nov 1889. This is certainly due to the use of the current name at the time the record was created, rather than the name on the given date. [obituary-katherine-schoenfelder-1985]

FOLLOWUP

Katherine's parents may be Mathias Bohr (1846-1933) and Catharina Sprang (1850-1931), both born in Germany.

Similar to the Dakota Territory vs. South Dakota issue noted for her birth location, the town of Parkston did not exist until about June 1886, so it is possible she was not born in Parkston, exactly. Prior to that time, the ad hoc town of Dakota City had grown, starting around 1881, becoming an "official" town around 1883. At the end of May 1886, the businesses and residents of Dakota City were set to move to the newly platted town of Parkston, with the newspaper (Dakota City Advance) being the first on 4 Jun 1886. Most of the town had been moved to Parkston by 25 Jun, including six or eight general stores, three or four hardware stores, four machine dealers, two or three lumber companies, two restaurants, a barber shop, a meat market, saloons, a bank, livery stable, dozens of tradesmen, and the prospect of a steam mill.
