CONFLICTS

Birth Date: This database uses 10 Oct 1835. The 1880 US Census gives an age of (45), which, when applied to the official census date of 1 Jun 1880, gives a birth date range from 2 Jun 1834 to 1 Jun 1835. [census-us-1880-ps-wi-sauk-251-15]

Birth Date: This database uses 10 Oct 1835. A passenger list for his trip to the US gives an age of (40), which, when applied to the record date of 16 Apr 1872, gives a birth date range from 17 Apr 1831 to 16 Apr 1832. [borders-list-newyork-ny-ss-bremen-p8-16apr1872]

Birth Location: This database uses Kinereich Bayern (Kingdom of Bavaria). The 1900 US Census, 1910 US Census, and 1920 US Census for his daughter uses Germany, which didn't exist on his birth date. [census-us-1900-ps-sd-davison-114-8a, census-us-1910-ps-sd-davison-135-6b, census-us-1920-ps-sd-jackson-96-3a]

FOLLOWUP

Joseph's parents were born in Bavaria [Kinesreich Bayern] [census-us-1880-ps-wi-sauk-251-15]

Joseph may have been born in Brücken, Schönenberg Bürgermeisterei, Bayerische Rheinpfalz, Kinereich Bayern (Kingdom of Bavaria). As of 2024, that location is Brücken (Pfalz), Kusel Kreis, Rheinland-Pfalz, Deutschland (Germany). Note that Bayerische Rheinpfalz was an exclave of Bayern; that is, an area that is geographically isolated from the rest of its state, and completely surrounded by foreign territory.

The passenger list of the SS Bremem, arriving in the Port of New York in Apr 1872, includes the Joseph and Anna Bauer family. The list includes the (probable) children Therese[Theresia], Anton, Josef, Alois, and Johann. These are the known children who were born in Bayern (and adds two that were not recorded in the 1880 US Census, covering the long gap between Theresia and Alois). However, although most ages are only a year off (a common issue), the differences in the ages of Joseph (about 2 years) and Theresia (about 4 years) are concerning. [borders-list-newyork-ny-ss-bremen-p8-16apr1872]

The family may have lived in Buffalo, NY after immigrating to the United States, moving to Plain, Frankliin Town, Sauk County WI, USA in 1874.

In 1885, Joseph and Anna Bauer can be found in the state census, living in Franklin Town, Sauk County, WI. There are 6 males, 2 females in the household (all "white"), 6 born in Germany, 2 in the United States. This agrees with the known information, with Theresia moving out after her 1882/3 marriage to John Schoenfelder. (Wisconsin, U.S., State Census, 1855-1905, Ancestry database, path "1885 ⟩ Sauk ⟩ Franklin", image 3, left page, #7)

In 1895, the Wisconsin state census records a Joseph Bauer Jr., living alone, and who is probably Josef in the passenger list above. It also includes Joseph Bauer Sr. with a family including 3 male, 1 female, 3 born in Germany, 1 in the United States. This could be Joseph, Anna, George, and Johann. (Wisconsin, U.S., State Census, 1855-1905, Ancestry database, path "1895 ⟩ Sauk ⟩ Franklin", image 2, right page, #3,4)

In 1905, Joseph can be found, still in Franklin, with his wife Anna, but now empty-nesters. Joseph Bauer Jr. can be found next door (presumably) to his parents, and now married to Augusta, with children Anna, Clara, and Rosa. Another of the senior Joseph's sons, George, lived on the other side (presumably) with wife Francisca and children Mary, Anna, Albert, and Emma. (Wisconsin, U.S., State Census, 1855-1905, Ancestry database, path "1905 ⟩ Sauk ⟩ Franklin", image 11, right page, lines 31-37)

There is an unverified story included in his Find A Grave memorial, but I think the story may not apply to *this* Joseph Bauer, who I believe was born in Bayern, not Böhmen (Bohema).
