Comment Detail: Source includes date (September 7, 1846) and location (Licking County, Ohio). The text actually identifies the county as Licken. However, I could find no Licken County during Dorwins lifetime, after checking a map of Ohio counties from 1845, 1856, and following a sequence of county formation up to 1888 (all at mapgeeks.org/ohio). Therefore, the text is presumed to be an error and the county is actually Licking, the closest match I could find. (Lucas county is a potential candidate.)

General Notes and Anecdotes

Dorwin enlisted for a six-month service during the American Civil War. At the end of this period he re-enlisted and served for the remainder of the war. One of the campaigns in which his unit engaged was Sherman's "march to the sea." [obituary-dorwin-higley-1918]

He maintained a home library of some 20 volumes. [census-us-ks-1915-s1-rawlins-celia-5]

Although ailing for some time, the condition was not thought serious, and Dorwin was attending to his duties as county treasurer the day before his death, which occurred in the early morning at around 3:00am. [obituary-dorwin-higley-1918]

Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)

CONFLICTS

Birth Date: This database uses 7 Sep 1846. Using his age (34) on the official 1880 census date of 1 June 1880 gives a birth date range from 2 June 1845 to 1 June 1846. (This conflict goes away if this page's enumeration date of 9 June 1880 was incorrectly used instead of the official census date.) [census-us-1880-ps-il-knox-143-17]

Birth Date: This database uses 7 Sep 1846. The Q4 1890 muster roll for the Grand Army of the Republic [a fraternal organization created exclusively for honorably discharged Union veterans of the American Civil War; it had over 400,000 members at its height] uses an age that is unclear. Obvious interpretive choices are 42 and 49, both of which would be in conflict. The age that would not be in conflict is 44 but this seems an unlikely value. [misc-gar-muster-roll-post-233-q4-1890]

Marriage Date: This database uses 3 Dec 1863. The 1900 U.S. Census gives the number of years (32) of marriage, which, when applied to the official census date of 1 Jun 1900, gives a marriage date range from 2 Jun 1867 to 1 Jun 1868. [census-us-1900-ps-ks-rawlins-134-6a]

SPELLING

Given Name: This database uses Dorwin. The 1860 U.S. Census uses Darwin. [census-us-1860-ps-oh-licking-bennington-44]

FOLLOWUP

According to his obituary, Dorwin moved from Ohio to Iowa in 1866, but then says "where he lived moving to Knox" which makes no sense. It may be that he lived in Iowa before moving to Knox County Illinois, or it may be improperly inserted text and he never moved to Iowa..After Knox County, he again moved, this time to Nebraska in 1883. The move to Knox County may have set the stage for him meeting and marrying Arabell in 1883, or he may have moved after meeting her. [obituary-dorwin-higley-1918]

In 1902, Dorwin was appointed by the "Federal Government Townsite Commissioner of the Cherokee Nation in the Indian Terrirory..." I'm not quite able to decipher this. It looks like his title was "Townsite Commissioner of the Cherokee Nation" but I can't find what that means. During this 3-year appontment, he was apparently living in Indian Territory (eastern portion of the Oklahoma Territory, I thnk) and afterwards returned to Rawlins County.
