General Notes and Anecdotes

Eva, along with her parents and siblings, were early members of the Wichita Methodist Church, dedicated in June 1898. Eva was also responsible for organizing the first Ladies Aid for the church, soon after its dedication. They raised money through church suppers and bazaars, and created a name quilt in 1902, sponsored by the sale of quilt blocks with people's names. The quilt was sold at auction to Steve Gilson for $20. (As of 1976, it was in the possession of his daughter.) [periodical-wichita-church-bicentennial-1976]

By 1930, David and Eva had moved in with son Kenneth's family in Jones County. The next year however, they had moved back to their old homstead in Pennington County. They lived there, with son George's family, for the rest of their lives. [book-proving-up-jones-county-history-1969, census-us-1930-ps-sd-jones-11-1a]

CONFLICTS

Given Name: This database uses Eva Penrose. The obituary of her son Kenneth uses Etta Eva. I have no idea where "Etta" came from but it is clearly an error. [obituary-kenneth-spear-1975]

Birth Date: This database uses 6 Feb 1868. Using her age (3) on the official 1870 census date of 1 June 1870 gives a birth date range from 2 June 1866 to 1 June 1867. [census-us-1870-ps-ia-cedar-springdale-23]

Birth Date: This database uses 6 Feb 1868. The 1930 U.S. Census gives an age of (63), which, when applied to the offical census date of 1 Apr 1930, gives a birth date range from 2 Apr 1866 to 1 Apr 1867. [census-us-1930-ps-sd-jones-11-1a]

FOLLOWUP

Eva may have been born 6 Feb 1868 in Springdale, Cedar County, Iowa. [research-a-spear-family-history]

Eva was born into a Quaker family, but may have joined the Methodist Church when she was 14, after her family moved to Guthrie County, IA. (From a transcribed copy of her obituary in an unidentified Pennington County, SD newspaper, May 1937.)

Were David and Eva actually married in Wichita, Iowa? [research-a-spear-family-history]

In 1926, Eva's husband D.C. purchased 12 acres and a cabin in the Black Hills near Keystone, where they lived for the remainder of their lives. Because of the visible stone core of the Hills rising above the home, Eva named it Rock Valley. Many days were spent collecting the colorful quartz and obsidian to construct a layered retaining wall in front of the house.
