General Notes and Anecdotes

Kenneth moved with the rest of his family to Wessington Springs, South Dakota about 1903, where in late 1905 they filed for a homestead in on White Clay Creek. By late April 1906 they were ready to move to their new home, where they arrived in early May 1906. Although they shipped their goods (mostly) via the railroad, the family came by wagon. [book-proving-up-jones-county-history-1969]

In 1945, he retired from working the farm he had inherited from father D.C. and sold it to O.A. Magnuson. He then moved to Hot Springs, South Dakota, where he owned and operated a tourist court. [book-proving-up-jones-county-history-1969]

Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)

CONFLICTS

Birth Location: This database uses Guthrie County, Iowa. Kenneth's obituary misspells this as Gutherie. There isn't now, and never was, any such county. [obituary-kenneth-spear-1975]

Residence (13 Apr 1940): This database uses Lincoln Township, Jones County, South Dakota. The obituary of David C. Spear uses Draper [, South Dakota]. In 1940, Lincoln Township was just west of Draper and northeast of Murdo, and it is probable that he used the Draper post office. It was later dissolved, joining with other dissolved townships into the unincorporated Central Jones County. [obituary-david-spear-1940]

Father's Name: This database uses David C. Spear. Kenneth's obituary uses David Z. Spear. [obituary-kenneth-spear-1975]

Mother's Name: This database uses Eva Penrose Spear. Kenneth's obituary uses Etta Eva Spear. [obituary-kenneth-spear-1975]

FOLLOWUP

Kenneth's middle name was Maris, and he may have been born 9 Feb 1891 in Wichita, Guthrie County, Iowa. [research-a-spear-family-history]

Kenneth and Ethel may have had another child, Gordon Paul Spear (b. 20 Apr 1924 in Pierre, South Dakota) who was either stillborn or died within hours of birth. He was bured in Draper Cemetery in Draper, South Dakota. [research-a-spear-family-history]

In 1930, Kenneth and Ethel's family lived near the Ray C. Spears family; Ray's family was in fact in the next dwelling that was enumerated. However, I have no information about them yet. The addition of 's' to the end of Spear is a common error, one that I've often had to contend with. So the first question is, are they from the Spears lineage, a distinct Spear lineage, or an unrecorded branch of Kenneth's ancestry? I have found examples of distinct and apparently unrelated Spears and Spear lineages in unexpected areas of the country. But if they aren't related, it's a major conincidence for both to be located in the same township in rural Jones County, South Dakota. Certainly not impossible, but enough to raise the question.

Kenneth worked for the WPA for year, probably during the Great Depression or WWII. [story-depression-stories-dorotha-dickey]

He may have died in Hot Springs, Fall River County, South Dakota. [research-a-spear-family-history]
