When she was a teenager living in Jackson County (SD), Veronica was helping the local cafe owners by offering her services as a nanny, and sometimes waiting on tables. It was while doing this that she met George. [interview-{private}-2006-b]

Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)

SPELLING

Surname: This database uses Breck. The 1920 and 1930 U.S. Censuses, the state record of her marriage with George Spear, and the obituary of her sister Helen, uses the older spelling of Brech. [census-us-1920-ps-sd-jackson-96-3a, census-us-1930-ps-sd-jackson-7-1a, marriage-spear-brech-1935, obituary-helen-shields-2010]

FOLLOWUP

Although the 1940 US Census indicates that Veronica lived in the "same house" as George on 1 Apr 1935, they were not married until May. [census-us-1940-ps-sd-pennington-84-1a, obituary-george-spear-1991]

Veronica worked at Custer State Hospital in Custer, South Dakota, but I have only my memories of this. I don't know when she started or when she stopped working there. A backgrounder has been written for the facility and should be applied when I have more information (or decide to go with my limited memories).
