Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)

CONFLICTS

Relationship (Father): This database uses daughter. The 1930 U.S. Census indicates Pearl's relationship to her father Edward is "son" which is clearly incorrect. [census-us-1930-ps-mn-ottertail-22-2b]

Residence (Buena Park,1963): This database uses about 1963. In Pearl's obituary, the date is implied to be about 1964. [obituary-pearl-johnson-1971]

SPELLING

GIven Name: This database uses Pearl Eileen. The 1930 U.S. Census uses Perl for her first name. [census-us-1930-ps-mn-ottertail-22-2b]

Given Name: This database uses Pearl Eileen. Her baptism and confirmation certificates use Elen for her middle name. [religious-baptism-pearl-marks-1918, religious-confirmation-pearl-marks-1933]

DUPLICATION

Pearl's memorial card and her obituary contain duplications and are probably not independent sources. However, they also have significant differences, with information shown on one but not the other, so both are used. Care has been taken to avoid both both being used as evidence for the same facts (with the exception of Pearl's name, to establish credibility of the source for this person). And for such duplication, the obituary has been used as the source. [memorialcard-pearl-johnson-1971, obituary-pearl-johnson-1971]

FOLLOWUP

Ray and Pearl eloped. Probable locations for the ceremony may have been Moorhead, MN, Fargo, ND, or Los Angeles, CA. Unfortunately, they never talked about the marriage with their daughter. [interview-helen-oram-2009, interview-{private}-2006-a]

The residence of Ray and Pearl between 1959 and 1963 is a little confusing. An interview with Helen Oram indicates they were in Downey (Los Angeles County) about 1959 and Buena Park (Orange County) about 1963 and implicitly excludes any other address between those two locations. Pearl's obituary gives indicates she was living in Buena Park for 7 years before her death in 1971, implying they moved there in 1964. However, the death certificate for Ray implies they were in Orange County about 1960, by stating that at his death in 1992, he had been in Orange County for 32 years. My ({private} Spear's) personal recollection (albeit rather dim as I was still a toddler by the end of that period) is that they were not living in separate locations for any of those years.
