Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)

CONFLICTS

Birth Date: This database uses 26 Nov 1869. The 1870 U.S. Census gives an age of (1), which, when applied to the offical census date of 1 Jun 1870, gives a birth date range from 2 June 1868 to 1 June 1869. [census-us-1870-ps-ia-cedar-springdale-23]

SPELLING

GIven Name: This database uses Lilly Clarissa "Lydia". The obituary for her father George Maris uses the alternate spelling "Lyddia". [obituary-george-maris-1915]

GIven Name: This database uses Lilly. The 1900 and 1910 U.S. Censuses, and Maris Family in the United States use the alternate spelling of Lillie. [census-us-1900-ps-ia-allamakee-15-8a, census-us-1910-ps-co-mesa-92-7a, book-maris-family-in-the-us-1885]

FOLLOWUP

The name Lydia is used in place of Lilly quite often. While Lilly is used in this database because it is on her (delayed) birth certificate as her "official" name, it appears that she often used Lydia and was likely known by this name to friends and family. Because of this, Lydia is noted as a nickname.

Lilly lived on a farm "out of" Waukon. Waukon borders Union Prarie Township, where other sources place her. [interview-cora-mcquisten-2007]

Florence Maris (17, b. Iowa), a sister of Lilly, was staying with Fred and Lillie Stilwell's family in June 1900. [census-us-1900-ps-ia-allamakee-15-8a]

From the 1910 U.S. Census, Lilly was married prior to her marriage to Fred Stilwell. The 1930 U.S. Census indicates she was first married at age 26, or about 1896. [census-us-1910-ps-co-mesa-92-7a, census-us-1930-ps-ia-allamakee-8-3a]
