Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)

CONFLICTS

Birth Date: This database uses 7 Apr 1899. The 1900 US Census gives an explicit birth date (May/1899) and an age (1). When applied to the official census of 1 Jun 1900, the age gives a birth date range of 2 Jun 1898 to 1 Jun 1899, so the record is internally consistent, and agrees with the stored database information. However, the birth month of May is in conflict. [census-us-1900-ps-sd-davison-114-8a]

Birth Date: This database uses 7 Apr 1899. The 1920 U.S. Census gives an age of (21), which, when applied to the offical census date of 1 Jan 1920, gives a birth date range from 2 Jan 1898 to 1 Jan 1899. [census-us-1920-ps-sd-jackson-96-3a]

Birth Location: This database uses Davison County, South Dakota, USA. His obituary states the location was Hutchinson County [, South Dakota, USA], which shares a short border with Davison County. [obituary-joseph-schoenfelder-1971]

FOLLOWUP

It is very confusing as to why the 1910 US Census explicitly gives his birth month as May, while the date reported in his state records (and apparently, most other records) gives a date in April. This is especially true since he was only a year old in 1910, and the month should have been well known to both parents, who presumably informed the census enumerator. However, the birth information available to me (through a text-only birth index) shows a file date of 17 Nov 1942. Was this a delayed birth record? Could that also mean that he really was born in May, but that sometime when he was young that was morphed into April? If so, why?

Note that Albert J. Schoenfelder appears to be a different person, not just a personal choice to exchange first and middle given names. The confusion can arrise because Albert J. was also born in 1899 in South Dakota, and married in South Dakota, and shares many of the same locations for events in his life. However, his obituary notes he was born 6 Jul in Hutchinson County (wrong day (by 1), month and county), married 1925 in Parkston (wrong year and location, though it could have been a second marriage), and was survived by a brother Tony and a (unamed) sister (as far as I know, Joseph Albert has no brother with Tony or Anthony as a given name, and his only sister passed in 1960, long before Joseph).
