Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)

CONFLICTS

Birth Location: This database uses Cottonwood, Jackson County, South Dakota. The record of marriage between Donald and {private} Hall specifies Rapid City, South Dakota. [marriage-breck-hall-1956]

SPELLING

Surname: This database uses Brech. The obituaries of his son Brian and his sister Estelle Taylor, and his SSDI entry use the spelling Breck. [death-brian-breck-1969, obituary-estelle-taylor-2005, ssa-npri-ssdi-don-breck-2011]

FOLLOWUP

Donald Joseph Brech seemed to be somewhat ambivalent about his surname spelling, assuming he verified spelling, and multiple records use Brech, while others use Breck. This corresponds to a general change in the family of changing from Brech to Breck.

The Record of Marriage between Donald and {private} Hall notes that he was divorced before their marriage. [marriage-breck-hall-1956]

Donald and {private} divorced on 10 Jun 1975 in Multnomah County, Oregon. (Ancestry.com database Oregon, U.S., Divorce Indexes, 1961-1985)

The 1946 obituary for John Brech (Donald's father) notes Donald's residence as Tacoma, Washington. Although his prior residence was Omaha, Nebraska, he was also in the Army in the interim, which sometimes results in a new residence afterwards. However, he then was in Rapid City, South Dakota in 1951, and back in Vancourver, Washington in 1956. This seems odd, and needs to be clarified. [obituary-john-brech-1946]

The obituary for Leona Kury references her brother Don Brech of Portland, Oregon. However, Leona died on 3 Jun 2011, almost two months after Donald, and he was living in Canby, Oregon (just south of Portland) by that time. Did the obituary writer not have that information?
