Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)

CONFLICTS

Birth Location: This database uses Königreich Preußen [Kingdom of Prussia]. The 1910 and 1920 US Census use Germany. This is likely due to Germany being the correct use at the time the record was created, but which didn't exist as a state in 1859. [census-us-1900-ps-sd-hutchinson-186-7b, census-us-1920-ps-sd-douglas-80-6b]

Immigration: This database uses 1874. The 1920 U.S. Census gives a date of 1872. [census-us-1920-ps-sd-douglas-80-6b]

SPELLING

Given Name: This database uses Theodore. His grave marker uses the spelling Theodor. [marker-theodor-christina-brech-1930-1906]

FOLLOWUP

The John and Elizabeth Brech family, may have arrived in the port of Philadelphia in 1874.

The record for his 1882 marriage to Christina Breuch seems to indicate he was born in the "Wellsibllig District" somewhere in Europe. However, the name of the state or other regional district is not clear. It appears to be something like Brieß, but I haven't found it; my transcription may very well be wrong. [marriage-brech-breuch-1882]

Theodore and Christina Brech's marriage in 1882 was witnessed by Joseph Breuch (Christina's brother?) and Elizabeth Breuch (Christina's sister?). [marriage-brech-breuch-1882]

Theodore may have been naturalized in 1886 in Hutchinson County, South Dakota. From the South Dakota State Archives (from index, no documents yet): First Papers (Theodore Brech, Armstrong County, Date of Intent: 22 Mar 1880, Birth Country: Prussia, Page: 27, Location: 343) and Second Papers: (Theodor[e] Brech, Hutchinson County, Final Date: 1 Jun 1886, Country Renounce: Germany, Page: 68, Location: 346).

There is a marriage record for Theodore Brech (48) marrying Mary Miller (42), 22 Dec 1908 in Davison County, SD. The record shows him living in Davison, for which I don't have any other evidence. This might be a different Theodore. (South Dakota, U.S., Marriages, 1905-2018, Ancestry database, "⟩ 1905-1912,Index", image 236, entry #9585)

He (63) may have married Mary Pfeiffer (49) on 30 Nov 1922 in Philip, Haakon County, SD. She lived in Philp and he resided in Cottonwood, Jackson County, for which I don't have any other evidence. This might be a different Theodore. (South Dakota, U.S., Marriages, 1905-2018, Ancestry database, "⟩ 1922-1923", image 1180)

Theodore may have died in Haakon County, South Dakota, which could support the Pfeiffer marriage.
