Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)

SPELLING

Surname: This database uses Lamothe. The 1870 US Census uses the spelling Lamot. [census-us-1870-ps-la-orleans-new-orleans-61]

FOLLOWUP

Be careful with research, as there are slave transfer records with 'a' Martin Lamotte as the buyer and others with 'a' Martin Lamotte as the seller.

The 1870 US Census shows Margette and George Galiot living with the Martin and Henriette family. Galiot is presumably a spelling variant of Julliot, and could be Henriette's neice and nephew. [census-us-1870-ps-la-orleans-new-orleans-61]

The 1880 US Census notes Martin Lamoth (50) as a tenant in the Charles and Adelaide Bouchand household. He is identified as mulatto. He is also identified as married, but no wife is listed, nor are any children. (1880 United States Federal Census, Ancestry database, path "Louisiana ⟩ Orleans ⟩ New Orleans ⟩ 049", image 41)

There exists a passport application (15 Oct 1920 in New Orleans) and a consular registration for Edward J. Lamothe, son of Martin Lamothe. However, his birth date of 7 Aug 1869 differs from Martin's daughter Etna by less than two months, and no Edward is listed in the 1870 US Census for the Martin family, nor any child with a given name starting with 'J'. (U.S., Passport Applications, Ancestry database, 1795-1925, path: "Passport Applications, January 2, 1906 - March 31, 1925 ⟩ 1920 ⟩ Roll 1388 - Certificates: 101750-102125, 19 Oct 1920-20 Oct 1920", image 335)

Military Service

Did Martin serve in the 6th Louisiana Infantry (U.S. Colored Troops)? There is a record for a Martin Lamotte[Lamothe] joining Company A in New Orleans, LA on 2 Jul 1863, mustered out on 1 Sep 1863 or 1865, again in New Orleans. The muster-out year is not clear, but the record also seems to indicate he joined for a period of 60 days. It also notes he was promoted to [?] Sergeant on 3 Aug 1863, but was not present for the presentation. (U.S., Colored Troops Military Service Records, 1863-1865, Ancestry database, path "Infantry ⟩ 6th Louisiana Infantry (African Descent) ⟩ Gusman, Thomas - Meyer, Wilson", image 789)

Alternately, there is a record for a Martin Lamotte[Lamothe] joining the First Native Gaurds militia in the CSA. (record on Fold3, but I don't have a membership)
