Comment Detail: Source includes birth date (Aug/1862), age (38), and location (Russia [Rossiyskaya Imperiya (Russian Empire)]). Using his age and the official census date of 1 Jun 1900 gives a birth date range from 2 Jun 1861 to 1 Jun 1862, which is internally inconsistent. It also includes year (1882) of immigration and his age at that time (18), giving a birth year of 1864, which is inconsistent with both his birth date above and the computed date range.

Comment Detail: Source includes date (January 22 1887) and occupation (Colector[Collector]). The occupation was corrected and approved by the Commissioner of Health, presumably at the same time as the other alterations on the certificate. The type of collector is unspecified, but it was likely as an individual that either reminded people of a debt owed to a company, or actually collected those debts. Perhaps for a clothing company, given his later occupations. It was presumably not the hobbiest definition of collector.

Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)
CONFLICTS
Birth Date: This database uses Aug 1862. The 1910 US Census gives an age of (49), which, when applied to the official census date of 15 Apr 1910, gives a birth date range from 16 Apr 1860 to 15 Apr 1861. [census-us-1910-ps-ny-newyork-543-5b]
Birth Date: This database uses Aug 1862. The birth return for his son Sol gives an age of (23), which, when applied to the birth date of 22 Jan 1887, gives a birth date range from 23 Jan 1863 to 22 Jan 1864. [birth-sol-miller-1887]
Birth Location: This database uses Rossiyskaya Imperiya (Russian Empire). His son Sol's birth return identifies his birth place as Poland. [birth-sol-miller-1887]
SPELLING
Given Name: This database uses Asher. The 1910 US Census uses the apparent spelling Arber, though this is likely due to the sloppy writing; the name can be interpreted as Asher, assuming it was written too quickly. [census-us-1910-ps-ny-newyork-543-5b]
FOLLOWUP
The 1900 US Census indicates his parents were Russian, and the 1910 US Census indicates they were born in Russia-Polish[sic], likely due to political changes. However, it notes that he (Asher) was born in "Russia Jewish." [census-us-1900-ps-ny-newyork-65-15a, census-us-1910-ps-ny-newyork-543-5b]
The birth return for his son Sol, originally noted that his surname (and his son's) was Müller, but this was altered to Miller; the alteration approved by the Commissioner of Health. Did Asher "Americanize" his name? [birth-sol-miller-1887]
Living with the Asher and Annie Miller family in 1900 was Minnie Leicheter, 22, a native of Austria, who immigrated in 1897, and who was working as a servant for the family. [census-us-1900-ps-ny-newyork-65-15a]
Living with the Arber[Asher] and Amia[Annie] Miller family in 1910 was Dora[?] Kirshbauer[?], 22, a native of Austria, who immigrated in 1905, and who was working as a servant for the family. [census-us-1910-ps-ny-newyork-543-5b]
Given the notation in the 1910 US Census that he was born in "Russia Jewish," does this mean he was a Jew who left Russia, possibly due to the pograms around that time? [census-us-1910-ps-ny-newyork-543-5b]
Asher was involved with clothing as noted by his occupation in the 1900 and 1910 US Censuses. A series of bankruptcy notices for Asher Miller & Co., a business name for Asher Miller, in The New York Times on (at least) 12 Apr, 25 Apr, and 9 May 1912. The legal notices also indicate that property will be sold at auction, including skirts, other clothing/fabric goods, and fixtures and furniture. Is this the same Asher Miller? If so, could the stress from this bankruptcy have led to his death later that same year, or was the bankruptcy a symptom/result of whatever he was going through in the months/years before his death? (New York Times, New York, New York, p.19 on 12 Apr 1912, p.22 on 25 Apr 1912, and p.20 on 9 May 1912)
The death index used for Asher identifies certificate #23925. Obtaining an image of this certificate will currently require a trip to New York or patience. The online historical vital records site for New York City (www.nyc.gov/records) notes that, as of Fall 2023, Manhattan death certificates had only been digitized for the years 1866 to 1867, 1871 to 1875, and 1920 to 1948, and a search in Mar 2024 didn't show a match.
