Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)

CONFLICTS

Given Name: This database uses Marie. The 1920 U.S. Census uses the given name Launay, which may actually be her birth surname (noted in FOLLOWUP section below regarding a marriage license). [census-us-1920-ps-nj-hudson-318-2b]

Given Name: This database uses Marie. The 1915 New Jersey census uses the given name Heneretta, probably a typo for Henrietta. However, this isn't even a nickname of Marie. Was one of these really a middle name? Also note that, although this source does not directly note Henrietta as the wife of Joseph, it does denote her occupation as "house wife." [census-us-nj-1915-morris-boonton-10b]

Birth Date: This database uses Dec 1880. The ship manifest for their immigration from Switzerland gives an age of (30), which, when applied to the departure date of 24 Aug 1912, and the arrival date of 3 or 4 Sep 1912, gives a birth date range from 25 Jul 1882 to 4 Sep 1882. The odd range is because I don't know which date is the correct reference for her age. [misc-ship-manifest-rijndam-1912-09-04]

Immigration Date: This database uses 3 or 4 Sep 1912. The 1915 New Jersey census includes years (3) living in the United States, which, when applied to the official census date of 1 Jun 1915 gives an immigration date range from 2 Jun 1911 to 1 Jun 1912. [census-us-nj-1915-morris-boonton-10b]

SPELLING

Given Name: This database uses Marie. Joseph Rizzi's 1918 draft registration uses the Americanized spelling Mary. [military-draftreg-joseph-rizzi-1918]

FOLLOWUP

Both of Marie's parents were born in France. [census-us-nj-1915-morris-boonton-10b]

When Joseph and Marie Rizzi and their family immigrated to the United States, their destination was Secaucus, New Jersey. This is noted twice: (1) under the "Final Destination" column on the left-hand page, and (2) under the "going to join a relative or friend" column on the right-hand page, which also notes they are intending to stay with "brother" Albert Rizzi (presumably Joseph's brother). The first appears to overwrite an earlier (possibly erroneous) destination of New York. Was the New York address a mistake of the clerk who entered the information, or had they changed plans? [misc-ship-manifest-rijndam-1912-09-04]

Joseph Rizzi and Marie L. Launay obtained a marriage license (#12783) on 16 May 1916 in Manhattan, New York. They were likely married that day or shortly after, but I don't have a return. Is this a different couple or did Joseph and Marie re-marry in the U.S.? (from an Ancestry database with images, New York, New York, U.S., Marriage License Indexes, 1907-2018 "⟩ Manhattan ⟩ 1916" images 1299 [Joseph Rizzi's entry] and 901 [Marie L. Launay's entry]. Note that although the book is set up with grooms on the left and brides on the right of the page spread, individuals are strictly sorted by their unmarried surname. This means that the individuals are generally found on separate pages.)

In the 1940 US Census, Joseph is identified as a lodger with his daughter Irma's family, but although his wife is not also listed, he is still identified as married. (Although the 'm' was crossed out, and a question mark may have been pencilled in.) Was she living in a nursing home at the time? By the 1950 US Census, Joseph is identified as a widower.
