FOLLOWUP
Note there are 4 WWI draft registration cards on Ancestry alone, for a John Davis, born 1880/1881.
Both of John's parents were born in Louisiana. [census-us-1920-ps-la-orleans-229-24a]
John's parents may be Jame P. Davis and Lou Davis. Data from John and Ellen's marriage certificate: DGS 4924368, image 738. (Access is limited to Family History Library facilities.)
The middle initial 'C' probably stands for Crumber, like his son, since they are "Sr" and "Jr". However, I've seen individuals in this relationship have different middle names, so that will have to remain as-is for now.
There exists a pair of NPRI marriage records for John C. Davis and Ellen Baptist. While there are a few small differences (none of which are serious problems), the effective birth date range for her is about 8 years before what I already have evidence for. In addition, the marriage year (1918) is after all of their children known to this database were born; this conflicts with Ellen being idenfitied as their probable (if not explicit) mother. The children could be explained if John and Ellen had a common-law marriage much earlier than the formal marriage, but her age would still be a problem. The actual certificate may be available from family search: DGS 4924368, image 738 and/or DGS 5170782, image 179, not available online.
