Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)
CONFLICTS
Given Name: This database uses Louis. The 1910 US Census uses the spelling Louisiy. This is clearly an error by the enumerator. [census-us-1910-ps-la-orleans-118-18a]
Surname: This database uses Guillemet. The 1910 US Census uses the spelling Giullment. [census-us-1910-ps-la-orleans-118-18a]
Surname: This database uses Guillemet. The marriage license for his daughter Irma's marriage to Joseph Lucas uses the spelling Guillenet. [marriage-lucas-guillenet-1927]
Birth Date: This database uses 14 May 1864. The 1900 US Census gives an explicit birth date (May 1865) and an age (35). When applied to the official census date of 1 Jun 1900, the age gives a birth date range of 2 Jun 1864 to 1 Jun 1865, so the record is internally consistent. [census-us-1900-ps-la-orleans-48-20b]
FOLLOWUP
In the 1900 US Census, Louis' father was born in France, and his mother in Virginia. In 1910, they were both born in Louisiana. [census-us-1900-ps-la-orleans-48-20b, census-us-1910-ps-la-orleans-118-18a]
The 1910 US Census has errors that required "arrows" to indicate the occupation and industry/buisness field belong to other people. For this household, there seem to be two listed occupations. One is working in a blacksmith shop, the other is a laborer in oil mills. As listed, these are the occupations of daughters Etna and Lucy, respectively. More likely candidates are Louis Sr, Raul/Louis Jr, or René. The enumerorator may have tried to correct one error by an arrow pointing the blacksmith shop entries to Louis Jr.'s line. [census-us-1910-ps-la-orleans-118-18a]
A marker exists for Louis Guillemet, 14 May 1864 to 14 Nov 1954 in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Detroit, Micigan. (Find A Grave, memorial 256915385) This birth year aligns with the marriage record of Louis and Etna. The memorial also includes a reference to the marker of daughter Irma Raymond (Guillemet) Lucas (1903-1988). The unsourced text for the memorial is: "Louis' wife, Etna (Lamothe) Guillemet was a daughter of Henrietta (Torrecano) Lamothe and Martin Lamothe. Martin was in the Union Army, 6th Louisiana Infantry, Colored Troops. Etna died in New Orleans, Louisiana Jan 11, 1914 at 44y, 1mo, 19 days of age." There is no other reference to Etna. Irma's memorial shows her in the same cemetery next to husband Joseph William Lucas (1903-1973), and includes a link to a memorial for son Ronald C. Lucas (1934-2019), also in the same cemetery.
I have no evidence to suggest a move to Detroit from Louisiana, beyond the presence of the named people in a cemetery of that city. (The fact that Joseph and Irma are burried there suggests Louis may have lived with them in that city in his later years, long after Etna's death.) Moreover, his son Robert was also married in Detroit.
Race Discrepencies
The 1900 US Census identifies Louis and Etna Guillemet, and their children Etna, Raul, Lucille, René, Robert, and Monie[Maurice] as being "white." The 1910 US Census identifies all of them, as well as younger children Rolland, Irma, and Richard as "mulatto." Ignoring the misspelling of their names in the 1910 US Census, the individuals common to the 1900 and 1910 US Census have the same given name (the family surname in 1910 is not exact, but is a close match, likely a spelling error by the enumerator), the same birth dates (within the census defined ranges), and the same birth locations.
