Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)

CONFLICTS

Surname: This database uses Maris. Passengers and Ships Prior to 1684 uses this spelling, but also notes the Morris spelling. [book-passengers-and-ships-prior-to-1684-1970]

FOLLOWUP

Alice's last name is often given as Wellsmith or Wilsmith, though this is controversial and there is no evidence for it. In The Genealogist, Volume 13.2 (Fall 1999), in the article "George Maris of Chester County, Pennsylvania" by Stewart Baldwin, the author suggests that the error may originate from a manuscript by Albert Cook Myers ("Notes on immigrants to Pennsylvania"). Baldwin notes that in the listing of children of George and Alice is the text "... of George and Alice (W. Mo. Mtg.) ..." Due to the difficult-to-read handwriting, "W. Mo. Mtg." could be misinterpretted as "Wilsmith."

Alice may have been born 16 Jan 1632 in Worcestershire, England.

Alice was from Hadswell, Inkbourough, England prior to her emigration to the Province of Pennsylvania. [book-passengers-and-ships-prior-to-1684-1970]

She probably died in Springfield, Chester County, Province of Pennsylvania.

Alice and George may have married in Worcestershire, England.
