FOLLOWUP

In 1900, George was a border in the home of Aaron Shepard, along with Arthur E. Shafer (b. Sep 1884 in Iowa), probably his brother. (1900 U.S. Census in Louisiana, Vermillion, Police Jury Ward 08, district 0099, sheet 11A, lines 41-46; and 1885 Iowa State Census in Iowa, Guthrie County, Seely, page 43 (stamped), line 10)

George's 1918 draft registration indicates he was married. However, he identifies her as Mrs. George Oscar Shafer, so no specific individual can be identified. [military-draftreg-george-shafer-1918]

The 1930 U.S. Census indicates that their marriage was the first marriage for both George and Mary, and that it took place when he was 31 and she was 30 (about 1903/1904). This implies that their daughter Ruth (born 1896/1897) was born out-of-wedlock. (Is it possible this marriage was not really the first for George and/or Mary, and that the census record is in error, or that George and Mary withheld some facts from the enumerator?)
