Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)

CONFLICTS

Birth Date: This database uses Oct 1988. The grave marker for Ellen (et. al.) uses the year 1889. (Her brother George's birth year is similarly off by 1.) [marker-davis-baptiste-joseph-1936-1951]

SPELLING

Given Name: This database uses Ellen. Her husband's 1918 draft registration appears to use the spelling Elein. [military-draftreg-john-davis-1918]

Surname: This database uses Baptiste. The 1900 US Census uses the spelling Baptist. [census-us-1900-ps-la-orleans-116-19a]

Surname: This database uses Baptiste. Her husband's 1918 draft registration appears to use the spelling Batiste. However, it is smudged in the first two letters. It might have been phonetically spelled, but the writer knew to add the final 'e'. [military-draftreg-john-davis-1918]

FOLLOWUP

Ellen's middle name may be Violetta and she may have been born 8 Jan 1888 in Orleans, Louisiana, United States. (check birth certificate on DGS 8357214, images 666, 667)

In 1920, John and Ellen's 3-year old nephew Alex Baptiste was staying with them. I don't have any information on the the names of his parents, though his father might have been Ellen's brother, Alexandre. [census-us-1920-ps-la-orleans-229-24b]

There exists a pair of NPRI marriage records for John C. Davis and Ellen Baptist. While there are a few small differences (none of which are serious problems), the effective birth date range for her is about 8 years before what I already have evidence for. In addition, the marriage year (1918) is after all of their children known to this database were born; this conflicts with Ellen being idenfitied as their probable (if not explicit) mother. The children could be explained if John and Ellen had a common-law marriage much earlier than the formal marriage, but her age would still be a problem. The actual certificate may be available from family search: DGS 4924368, image 738 and/or DGS 5170782, image 179, not available online.
