Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)

CONFLCTS

Birth Date: This database uses 24 Aug 1832. The 1880 US Census gives an age of (46), which, when applied to the official census date of 1 Jun 1880, gives a birth date range from 2 Jun 1833 to 1 Jun 1834. [census-us-1880-ps-mn-clay-186-2]

FOLLOWUP

Does Sarah have a middle name of Sarah, or did she adopt it as a nickname? [census-us-1880-ps-mn-clay-186-2]

The "middle name" on her grave marker is Gundersdatter, and follows the Norwegian patronymic naming convention for a daughter's surname. However, if it is her name, it conflicts with her name as noted on the birth registery of her son, Julius. That surname, Gunderson, does not follow the convention, but is used in this database since it is clearly used as a surname. (Interestingly, the female patroynmic suffix of -datter/-dadder can be found in several other entries on the page, but one other entry also uses the male suffix of -son/-sen.) [religious-registry-ministerial-houston-lutheran, marker-signe-aggerholm-1895]

An amateur genealogy on Ancestry claims Signe Gundersdatter is the daughter of Gunnar Tarjesen Rortvedt (1796-) and Tone Gunnardatter (1799-). However, no evidence is provided and I have questions about the names. First is the conincidence of Gunnar's wife's surname suggesting the wife's father was also Gunnar. Second is Signe's surname base of Gunder rather than Gunnar. I don't know if these are simple spelling variations or distinct names.

A passenger list appears to show 10 year old Signe Gundersdatter arriving on the [?] Aeolus at the Port of New York on or before 28 Aug 1843. (The passenger manifest was sworn to by the ship's master on that date.) (New York, U.S., Arriving Passenger and Crew Lists (including Castle Garden and Ellis Island), 1820-1957 , Ancestry database, path "Date ⟩ 1843 ⟩ August ⟩ 28 ⟩ Aeolus", image 1, line 24)

In addition to Matilda and Julius, Jens' Find A Grave memorial has an unsourced link to a child, Marius Theodore Aggerholm (17 Mar 1865 - 10 Jul 1866) who died as an infant. Unfortunately, the gravestone image is unreadable. (Marius' Find A Grave memorial #114181305)
