Research Notes (Conflicts/Spelling/Followup)

CONFLICTS

Given Name: This database uses Irma. The 1920 U.S. Census identifies her as Imoa. This is an unusual given name and is probably a mistake by the enumerator. [census-us-1920-ps-nj-hudson-318-2b]

Birth Date: This database uses 30 Sep 1901. The ship's manifest when Irma immigrated into the United States gives an age of (10 yrs 8 mos.), which, when applied to the departure date of 24 Aug 1912 and arrival date of 3/4 Sep 1912, gives a birth date range from 25 Nov 1901 to 4 Jan 1902. The odd range is because I don't know which date is the correct reference for his age. [misc-ship-manifest-rijndam-1912-09-04]

Middle Initial: This database uses 'L'. The marriage certificate and record for Charles and Irma uses the initial 'G'. [marriage-miller-rizzi-1923]

Immigration Date: This database uses 3 or 4 Sep 1912. The 1915 New Jersey census includes years (3) living in the United States, which, when applied to the official census date of 1 Jun 1915 gives an immigration date range from 2 Jun 1911 to 1 Jun 1912. [census-us-nj-1915-morris-boonton-10b]

SPELLING

Given Name: This database uses Irma. The 1915 New Jersey census uses the spelling Erma. [census-us-nj-1915-morris-boonton-10b]

FOLLOWUP

When Joseph and Marie Rizzi and their family immigrated to the United States, their destination was Secaucus, New Jersey. This is noted twice: (1) under the "Final Destination" column on the left-hand page, and (2) under the "going to join a relative or friend" column on the right-hand page, which also notes they are intending to stay with "brother" Albert Rizzi (presumably Joseph's brother). The first appears to overwrite an earlier (possibly erroneous) destination of New York. Was the New York address a mistake of the clerk who entered the information, or had they changed plans? [misc-ship-manifest-rijndam-1912-09-04]

Irma Rizzi's engagement to Jacob Fritsche was announced at a Thanksgiving dinner in 1921, held at the home of Irma's father, Joseph Rizzi. No date was given, but the understanding was that it would take place in Spring 1922. Also attending was Miss Marcelle Rizzi (Irma's sister?). Is this just a strong coincidence? Is it a broken engagement? Was it a very quickly ended marriage that was annulled, or divorced (and she lied about her marriage to Charles, claiming it was her first marriage)? Also at the dinner were several couples and individuals. Of particular interest are Mr. & Mrs. Albert Ruzzi[Rizzi?] who may have been her uncle (see Joseph Rizzi's research notes), Anton and Killian Ruzzi[Rizzi?], and others. (Hudson Observer [Jersey Observer and Jersey Journal on Newspapers.com], Jersey City, New Jersey, 25 Nov 1921, p.23, c.6, bottom of page)

Charles Miller and Irma Rizzi obtained a marriage license (#2703) on 5 Jun 1923 in Bronx, New York. They were likely married that day or shortly after, but I don't have a return. (from an Ancestry database with images, New York, New York, U.S., Marriage License Indexes, 1907-2018 "⟩ Bronx ⟩ 1923 - 1925" images 300 [Charles Miller's entry] and 381 [Irma Rizzi's entry]. Note that although the book is set up with grooms on the left and brides on the right of the page spread, individuals are strictly sorted by their unmarried surname. This means that the individuals are generally found on separate pages.)

Irma may be buried 5 Mar 1984 in Los Angeles National Cemetery, Los Angeles, California, in section 189, row Z, site 10. (from Veterans' Gravesites database on Ancestry and Find A Grave memorial #3735252; there are no images for either.)
